Investor.ge Editorial: the Negative Economic Impact of the Foreign Influence Law
Monday, May 27, 2024In the short term, the possibility of the law's passing has impacted the tourism sector, the value of shares in Georgia's internationally listed companies, and it has put notable pressure on the Georgian lari.
Longer term, if the law is passed, it will reduce funding for economic support programs that have been critical to Georgia's economic growth, particularly its infrastructure development. It will undermine Georgia's prospects for EU integration and could lead to the withdrawal of Georgia's EU visa-free travel or sanctions on Georgians. Finally, by signaling a rejection of its Western orientation, it will discourage Western investment and make Georgia more economically dependent on a highly problematic and volatile region.

Concerns regarding the Law 'on the Transparency of Foreign Influence'
Wednesday, March 01, 2023Dear AmCham Members,
On March 1, along with three other Business Associations, AmCham sent a letter to Speaker Papuashvili regarding the draft law that requires the registration of externally financed NGOs as 'agents of foreign influence'. As you know, we generally don't make public statements on legislation, as we are an apolitical institution that works with the government and parliament on many issues.
However, we are deeply concerned that this law will cause harm to many valuable foreign-financed projects, could weaken Georgia's chance of joining the EU and harms the investment environment. Therefore, we thought it was important to speak-out.
The full text of the letter is available in Georgian and English.
Best regards,
Irakli Baidashvili
President, the American Chamber of Commerce, Georgia

In Memoriam - Our Dear Friend & Colleague - Roy Southworth
Monday, July 29, 2019
Van Roy Southworth
June 10, 1949 - July 23, 2019
When I first met Roy in Tbilisi back in 2005, I felt I had met a kindred spirit. What I discovered as I got to know him better was that everyone who met him felt the same way-we all recognized something of ourselves in Roy, something that was good and fun and above all, caring. If you went to Roy's house on a Friday or Saturday night, you were liable to run into a pack of Peace Corps volunteers, staying at Roy and Cathy's while they were doing some city R & R. "They don't get paid very much," he explained, "so we like to give them a home when they come to Tbilisi."
